Now on the LSRI Blog: Latina Data-Symbolic Language Brokers

We’ve published a research proposal by Luis Contreras, Ph.D. student at Rutgers School of Communication and Information, on eldest Latina daughters as “data-symbolic language brokers.”

The piece examines how eldest Latina daughters translate and navigate digital symbols and interfaces on behalf of their immigrant families, performing critical but invisible technical and affective labor. Recognized as a Top Paper in the Latina/o Communication Studies Division and La Raza Caucus at the 2025 National Communication Association, this project reframes what counts as technical expertise by centering the experiences of women of color in everyday technological life.
