Dr. Mellie Torres (she, her, ella) is a Puerto Rican woman from “Brick City” (Newark, NJ). She is a publicly engaged scholar-practitioner whose work is at the nexus of research and policy in service of liberation and justice. Her research has been published in the Harvard Educational Review, Boyhood Studies, Race Ethnicity and Education, the International Journal of Educational Research, and, most recently, in New Directions for Student Services. Mellie holds a Ph.D. in Education from New York University, an M.A.T. in Mathematics Education from Montclair State University, an M.P.P. from the University of Michigan’s Ford School of PublicPolicy, and a B.S. in Mathematics from Seton Hall University. Before earning a Ph.D., Mellie was a high school math teacher at Arts High School in Newark and an economic development professional in the South Side of Chicago. She is a yogi and a runner.
